Car registrations in February (21,625) were up by 37% compared with February 2015 (15,778), statistics from SIMI has revealed. Meanwhile total new car sales is up by 35% on the same period last year.
Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) are up 50% (3,484) on February 2015 (2,328) and are up 39% overall compared to the same period last year.
Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) are up 26% for February 2016 (260) compared to the same month in 2015 (206), and up 83% for the year to date.
The best selling car of February was the Hyundai Tucson, which was also the best selling car in January. And the best selling colour is grey.
Commenting on the figures, SIMI Deputy Director General Brian Cooke said: “The increased growth in registrations, both in cars and commercial vehicles, for the month of February clearly indicate that consumer and business confidence remain strong.
“The increase in new car registrations is partly due to the pent-up demand that arose as Ireland has replaced so few older cars with new ones over recent years, and this in addition to lower new car prices driven by the generous offers from retailers and manufacturers, and the availability of low cost finance are all helping to increase sales,” he added.
